Department Overview:
Mission:
To provide structured Wellness/Fitness, educational, leisure time activities and programs to enhance the quality of life for the members of the surrounding Pueblo of Laguna communities.
Through creative programming the department will provide activities centered around the risk factors for chronic disease; namely physical fitness, healthy challenges, leadership activities, cultural preservation and physical well-being to all who participate.
Provide a creative and structured program of activities that entails wellness and fitness as well as educational opportunities for the members of the Pueblo and the general public. This is accomplished by utilizing the following program features: Wellness based activities, Sports programming; special events, health education/screenings and fitness programs. Within this aspect, the Sports & Wellness/Diabetes Program has adopted a seasonal programming concept. Target age groups are from children age 6 and above, young adults and adults.
Staff manages the 6,600 sq ft state of the art Fitness Center Monday thru Saturday for personal wellness and exercise and staff are trained to schedule personal training for individuals.
Hanu Cultural Program
Located at the Fitness center offers ongoing, community based, and special village based cultural and traditional instruction in classes, and experiential learning in arts, crafts, cooking, language, and other aspects of Laguna culture classes. The program is organizationally part of the Sports and Wellness program. The program is organizationally part of the Sports and Wellness program. Programs:
Soccer, basketball, Youth Spring Break and Summer Wellness programs.
Special Events:
Annual July 4th Fireworks Display, Laguna Fiesta Parade, Community Halloween Event, and Christmas holiday light parade.
Wellness/Fitness Series:
Community Walk/Runs at all Village/Fiesta days, Winter Walk/Run series, coordination/collaboration of walks/runs with other tribal programs, and Red Ribbon Relay.
Field use: For use of the new Baseball and softball fields, complete the User form and submit for review to the Program. Tribal members and other Native American teams utilize the fields for free. Charges apply to others. Use based on availability and scheduling.
